3 Tools for Creating Augmented Reality for iPad

Augmented Reality seems popular at the moment although many people think it is still beyond our reach as content providers. This has changed recently with the development of a new range of Apps that allow you to implement AR features on your iPad. Have a look at the three we have featured here for a peek at the way educational information could be presented. If you know of other please let us know so we can include them in the list.

1. Junaio - FREE
The new junaio 3.0 elevates the iPad 2 camera capability to a new level. Point your camera at whatever it is you want information on. This "Scan the World" feature can recognize pictures, QR codes and even product barcodes. Keyword search is still available, but the scanned image itself works now as a search query to get to content in junaio, making other kind of markers obsolete.

Junaio is an advanced mobile augmented reality browser, a mobile companion and instant source of information about places, events or bargains. What’s on at the movies, where is the nearest cash dispenser, taxi stand or subway station? Finding your way inside exhibitions, getting added information on products, ads or news articles. This and more at your finger tips with junaio, your mobile companion.

2. Daqri -FREE

View augmented reality enhanced QR codes created on daqri.com with the daqri App! Keep track of previously visited daqri codes in the History. Save daqri codes you really like to Favorites to check out later. Take photos with augmented reality and post them directly to Facebook!

daqri is an augmented reality platform that allows you to publish and view amazing augmented reality experiences, without writing a single line of code. With the daqri app, you can scan daqri QR codes to gain access to all kinds of content including videos, images, maps, phone numbers, links, and 3D augmented reality.

Layar is a mobile app for discovering information about the world around you. Using Augmented Reality (AR) technology, Layar displays digital information called “layers” into your smartphone’s field of vision.

Share your augmented experiences with your friends and followers. Simply connect to Layar with your Facebook or Twitter account and share your layers, spots and screenshots within your social networks.

Find your way around in Augmented Reality with Layar's intuitive user interface. Start directly from your most favorable and recently used layers. Easily explore brand new and featured layers.

Augmented Reality for Classrooms

AUSTRALIAN researchers aim to build toolkits for teachers to help them use augmented reality techniques in the classroom.
Increasingly used in games, but equally applicable to education, augmented reality combines the real and the virtual. Viewed through a tablet computer's camera, computer visualisations can be grafted on to real-world objects.

University of Canberra Teaching and Learning Centre senior lecturer Danny Munnerley said the project would look at developing mobile augmented reality kits to enable teachers to create tailored learning opportunities. The team also aimed to encourage augmented reality projects across all disciplines at university level.

This is an Apple issue.

Ambitious iOS Apps - Fraser Speirs

This is an interesting article and subsequent list from Fraser Speirs about Apps that are pushing the boundaries around iOS 5. Some of these Apps are the obvious ones and not all of them are specifically educational but it makes for a great list. It also gives us, the consumers a set of higher standards to be expecting from Apps developers. If we have the capability to use these new features then we should not just be expecting them we should be demanding them - especially those features that make the learning experience richer or deeper for our students.

I like all of these and would add one myself that I stumbled on the other day - Gamebook Adventures: Temple of the Spider God. Good for decision making and risk taking as well as a great book for getting boys to read. Enjoy!

Codify: Coding for the iPad Made Simple

10 out of 10 for this one.
Codify was released on Wednesday, 26 October 2011 for US$7.99 / AU$8.49.

We recently posted about Apps for Building Apps and by coincidence a new App was released less than a week later. It looks so good it would have been included in the first post so we thought it deserved a mention.

Codify is a platform that game designers, educators and students can use to create games or simulations. Codify allows users to build and play interactive games and simulations directly on their device. It was developed by three Australian guys from Adelaide - Simeon Nasilowski, John Millard and Dylan Sale. Kudos guys, love the clean simple interface. Check out their website at http://twolivesleft.com/. But if you want to see just how simple these guys have made this App check out the video.

Turn your games and simulation ideas into interactive creations that make use of the iPad features like Multi-Touch and the accelerometer. Codify for iPad is designed to let you touch your code. Want to change a number? Just tap and drag it. How about a color, or an image? Tapping will bring up visual editors that let you choose exactly what you want.

Codify is designed for rapid prototyping and easy development. At any time the code can be “played,” dropping the user into an interactive viewer that responds to multi-touch, accelerometer, and more.

It includes full, in-line reference documentation at the touch of a button, intelligent auto-completion, and a beautiful user interface. The code itself is based on Lua, a simple, elegant language that doesn't rely too much on symbols — a perfect match for the iPad.

This is a great opportunity those of us in the education sector (teachers and students) to be content creators and not just consumers.

Extra practice with ten frames and number sentences

This week my students began using ten frames in math. Students used math counters and ten frame worksheets to add numbers 1-10. We did a few math practice pages throughout the week, but I noticed a few students still needed some additional practice opportunities.

Using the iPad and the Drawing Pad App, students created their own ten frames to demonstrate their understanding. Initially, students created their own number problems. They illustrated the ten frame and wrote a corresponding number sentence. At the end of the practice time, I asked all students to create a ten frame that represented the number “8″. Students then took a screen shot of their ten frame and sent the photo to me via email.

Today (from the comfort of my couch!), I was able to view their photos and use their ten frame drawings to assess who understood how to use a ten frame and write a corresponding number sentence. These photos provided a quick and authentic way for me to use student work to plan for next week’s instruction. Additionally, I now have documentation of each child’s learning that I can share easily with their families. What a treat to have opportunities for extended practice right at our fingertips! Another fun day of learning with the iPads!
