iPad mail keeps loading older and older messages

I have got an iPad 2 and set up Gmail. Every time I open mail on my iPad, it keeps loading older and older messages. But I have set iPad Mail to 'delete from server when removed from inbox'.To prevent getting old mail, login Gmail via a web browser on your computer.
